Explore the untouched beauty of Indonesia through award-winning Nihi Sumba

Money may, or may not, be the thing that brings us happiness. But there’s a sure thing that will; traveling. When people travel, they are excited to see and experience new things. Neuroscientists have shown that new experiences can build new neuropathways in the brain. So when we travel, we get to rewire the brain. Experts also stated that traveling brings us closer into a better human being by opening our hearts and minds to see the world differently. But, what about traveling that also does a greater good for the community in the area? Nihi Sumba is doing just that.

Formerly known as Nihiwatu, Nihi Sumba is created by Chris Burch and well-known hotelier James McBride. Located on a remote island of Sumba, Nihi is more than just a hotel. It is a way of life. With philanthropy at the core of the business model, the Nihi legacy stands for more than just a destination. It stands for goodwill and an in- vestment in the preservation of the communities. Through The Sumba Foundation, Nihi continues to create awareness for the issues faced by the local communities, at the same time providing jobs and services that grow incomes and families and support basic needs such as health clinics, school lunches, and access to clean water. And because of its hospitality-centric humanitarian efforts,
Nihi Sumba has been voted as Travel + Leisure’s number one hotel two years in a row.

Covering an area of 22 hectares, Nihi Sumba overlooks a pristine 2.5 kilometer of private beach that is home to one of the best left-hand surf breaks in the world, known as Occy’s Left. In the late eighties, this area was a surf-cult destination created by surf enthusiast Claude Graves along with his wife, Petra. It is not until 2012 where Chris Burch and James McBride stepped up and turn this untouched beauty into a series of private villas. Buildings reflect the local Sumbanese culture and architecture, with traditional grass-thatched roofs, teak wood, and local artworks.

Nihi Sumba is home to 27 private villas with 38 rooms in a one, two, three, four, or five-bedroom layout, each with its own private pool and unre- stricted views of the ocean. Interiors are simple and rustic; featuring lots of teak and smooth marble floors. Furnishings are minimal that features a four-poster bed with high-quality bedding linens ready to welcome you after a long day of traveling or lazing under the hot Indonesian’s sun. Each of the villas also comes with a private butler who will be there to help you 24/7.

For dining, this resort offers four venues that bring exceptional private dining experiences. Ombak is the main restaurant that is located on the sandy beach of the resort. This place serves daily a la carte breakfast and dinner with choice of Indonesian or International cuisines. Nio Beach Club & Pool is located next to the resort’s lap pool and open daily for lunch serving the best grilled “catch of the day” along with BBQ, salads, and homemade pizza. For the best spot to see the sunset, head over to Boat House where snacks are served all day along with fresh coconuts, juices, or cocktails. They also have Japanese restaurant, Kaboku, a beachfront sushi bar that serves the freshest seafood Omakase style.

Being located on the island of Sumba, this resort is surrounded by a plethora of fun activities to maximize your holiday time. For example, for anyone who is ready to get wet, a selection of sea activities are waiting for him or her. Choose from surfing, snorkeling, ocean and river SUP, free diving, spearfishing, deep sea and FAD fishing, kayaking, boogie boards, wakeboarding, and Surfaris. For anything on-land, guests get to choose scenic excursion by hiking, mountain biking, horse riding, or open-air Lad Rover Safari. They also get to visit local villages and markets and try to create the exquisite Ikat weavings, local arts and crafts. Or visit their own chocolate factory where guests can partake in a chocolate making activity every day.

When it comes to relaxation, this resort offers spa experience like no other. The Boathouse Spa is perched above the crashing waves of the Indian Ocean with treat- ments ranging from manicures and pedicures to their signature Nihi massage that can be enjoyed on-site or at the villa. For a couple traveling on their honeymoon, Nihi has crafted a special Nihi Oka Spa Safari package. This includes trekking along the jungle to a secluded valley where four bamboo-clad couples’ treatment rooms await. Pick one of the homemade aromatic oils and indulge in a stress-busting massage with views of peaceful paddy fields.

Not only they care about the community, but Nihi Sumba also prides themselves in sustainability. No water bottle is used and much of the restaurants’ produce is grown in the resort’s organic garden, fed by a clever composting and water-recycling system. The hotel’s green ethos extends beyond its walls too, with community outreach programs in local villages, a turtle hatchery, and reducing malaria on the island.

With a price that starts at $795 per night in low season, guests are treated to an inclusive meal three times a day with morning or afternoon snacks and all non-alcoholic beverages. This also includes minibar, laundry, daily yoga or meditation, and of course free Wi- Fi. Anyone looking to fly out to this resort, an hour flight from Denpasar and a 90-minute joyride through Sumba will take you to your dream destination in Indonesia.
