Welcoming the latest edition to speakeasy phenomenon that is El Nacional
From the bright minds behind 40 Thieves, comes the latest addition to world of speakeasy bars. As with 40 Thieves, which is situated on the upper level of the Mad Ronin restaurant, El Nacional rests just above the Mad Sparrow restaurant. Described as 40 Thieves’ sexy Cuban sister, El Nacional is 30 seconds away from 40 Thieves. It is inspired by Hotel Nacional in Havana, Cuba which is dedicated to cigars, cocktails and rum. Home to the largest rum collection, El Nacional houses over 180 various fine Rums, the biggest rum collection in Indonesia.
Similar to how 40 Thieves can be found through the back of Mad Ronin, the entrance to El Nacional can be found through the back of Mad Sparrow, where a staircase leads to the upper level to reveal a doorway that is the entrance to El Nacional. Owner Shah Dillon, concepted, designed and executed the idea to give guests the feeling of being transported through the streets of Havana to the Hotel Nacional, a 1930s historical hotel in Havana where the upper class of society and the mob bosses of America gathered and mingled during a period when Cuba was a hot destination for Americans.
El Nacional has an outdoor seating with a capacity of 20pax and enjoys a stunning overview of the rice paddies. The indoor bar has a seating capacity of 40pax for a total capacity of 100pax with standing, and is elegantly designed with tropical, mischief, decadent and daring touches. The interior is furnished with gorgeous mahogany wood, marble and leather finish. A perfect place for post-dinner drinks and cigars, El Nacional is lit in a moody and dark ambience to portray an intimate setting for deep conversations with peers and loved ones. With over 180 wide- ranging bottles of rum in their collection, El Nacional is looking to expand it even more to around 350 bottles at the very least. According to Shah, there hasn’t been any establishment in Indonesia focusing on displaying Rums from all over the world and Shah intend to fill that void for Rum & Cigar aficionados.
El Nacional houses Havana Hour every day which is described as “the best daily happy hour in town”, which lasts for 4 hours staring from 6pm until 10pm with an affordable price of IDR 95,000nett for two house cocktails, rums & beers. El Nacional also hosts The Cabana Club every Saturday and Sunday, where the island’s hottest DJs bring out the island soul with Afro and Latin disco beats from 10pm until 2am. You be you can expect some serious dancing.
The team behind El Nacional has carefully crafted a cocktail program that utilizes the house blend Rum, where the team has blended a couple of white and dark Rums, with a smidge of Molasses and then Sous Vide the blend in a 24-hour span, displaying their masterful technique and craft of the rum blend and cocktail selections. El Nacional’s top favorite cocktail amongst guests is the Havana Joe, which is a different spin on the classic espresso martini, where the Kahlua is replaced with the Rum based house coffee liqueur, white rum, cold brew and finished off with a biscuit garnish.
Several upcoming programs that will be available at El Nacional is ‘Flights’, an interactive program where guests are taken on a Rum flight journey, tasting up to five rums from different countries, regions and styles of Rum. Another upcoming program is ‘Sugarcane Society’, where El Nacional will invite bartenders from all over the world who works in similar rum bars to showcase their knowledge and craft on Rums. With the ongoing programs and events already becoming a popular hit with the islanders, it is without a doubt that El Nacional will become a treasured gem in the speakeasy world of Bali. El Nacional opens every Tuesday – Thursday from 6pm – 12am and Friday – Sunday from 6pm to 2am.
